Nelson Birdsill/Birdsell was born Nov 10, 1831 in Townsend Township, Norfolk County, Ontario to James and Ellen Eliza Eleanor (Allgee/Elgee) Birdsill.

On Nov 4, 1868, Nelson married Annie Young in Brant County, Ontario.  Nelson’s last name was listed as Burtsell on the marriage certificate.

Nelson died on Dec 1, 1918 when he was 87 years old. The death record for Nelson states his mother as Eleanor Raleigh (a misunderstanding of Allgee) and that Nelson was a farmer. Dr. J.E. Anderson of Scotland, Ontario, was the attending physician, certified by John Birdsell of Mohawk, RR#1. The primary cause of death was influenza with pneumonia of a duration of 4 days. The immediate cause of death was heart failure for a few hours.

The 1851 Census for Canada West listed Nelson as a labourer and a Methodist.

The 1861 Census for Canada West, Townsend Township, gives Birdsill as the name for three family members, Birdsall and even Birdsale for others.

According to the Ontario Voter Lists, 1867-1900, Nelson was listed in Polling Sub-Division No. 2, comprising all that portion of the Township of Oakland lying east of the line separation lot 5 and 6 in each Concession. He was stated as a farmer living at Concession 1, Lot 14, entitled to vote at both Municipal and Legislative Assembly elections.


In the 1871 Census of Canada for the Township of Oakland (same location just a change of name, Nelson's name was back to Birdsill. He was listed as a farmer being originally from Scotland, as was his wife, Fanny (notice spelling change from Annie). Their daughter, Bertha, was stated as being 1 year old and their son, Arthur, as being 6 months old.


The 24 Apr 1891 Census for Oakland Township, Brant County, states Nelson to be a Methodist farmer who can read and write. His wife, Annie Young, was born in Ontario as was her father. Her mother was born in England. Annie can also read and write.
