06-85   James Birdsall   1783

06-85   James, Benjamin5,  Nathan4,  Benjamin3, Nathan2, Henry1

James Birdsall was born in 1783 in Quaker Hill, Dutchess, New York, son of Benjamin Birdsall and Elizabeth Akin Birdsall.  James married Rizpah Steere.

James studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1806.  He was the first lawyer to settle in Norwich, New York and became surrogate of Chenango County, New York in 1811.  He was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Fourteenth Congress and was United States Representative for the fifteenth district of New York from March 4, 1815 to March 3, 1817.

He was a member of the New York State Assembly (Chenango County) in 1827.  He was also one of the incorporators of the Bank of Chenango.  He moved to Fenton, Michigan in 1839 and later to Flint, Michigan.

James Birdsall died in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan on July 20, 1856 and is buried at Glenwood Cemetery in Flint, Michigan.

07-209 James, b. 1813, m. Jane Henderson, Raisin Valley, Michigan

07-210 Adelaide, b. 1815, m. William Fenton, Lt. Governor of Michigan in Fenton, MI. Note 117 in The Birdsall Family states:

Adelaide, 1815 m. William Fenton.  They had: Ada 1839, m. Creary; Henry 1841; J. Brush 1843; and Henry 1851.  Rizpah 1826 m. Charles Sutton.  A photostat copy of a letter sent by “Aunt EM” to “Kathryn” gave much of this information.  “Aunt EM” is Emma Birdsall 1876, m. Walter H. Brown.  “Kathryn” is Kathryn Birdsall 1887 m. Carl Breitenkamp.  Aunt Em said in her letter to her niece that Elizabeth, Rizpah and Catherine were “maidens,” and that letter was written about fifty years after the maidens were born.  From another source, I presume from the HISTORY OF CHENANGO AND MADISON COUNTIES, the three maidens were married as shown.  They may have become married after Aunt Em wrote the letter.  In the same letter Aunt Em says Rizpah gave one million dollars to fund a cat hospital.  There was also an indication that Rizpah may have been married a second time to a Mr. Kellogg.  Interested persons should search further in Genessee County, Michigan.
